3:15 – Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase (Class 2) – 3m 2f
By no means the ‘classiest’ renewal of this long standing Doncaster handicap chase but another good sized field with 14 declared to meet the starter.
Given the last 10 running’s of the race have seen an average of 8 runners to get 14 is good news for Doncaster.
Despite the small field sizes in the past ten years, it’s a race thats provided more than its fair share of big-priced winners - 5 winners from 21 runners 24% +79, 6 places were returned 14/1 & bigger.
Additionally, 5 winners from 17 runners 29% +43, 8 places had run at Grade 1 level in the past.
My initial Grimthorpe long list contained eight horses, but I’ve managed to get that down to a shortlist of five.
White Rhino a winner of his first two starts over fences before unseating his rider in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices' Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. No issues with the step up to 3m 2f, stayed well over hurdles or a return to a sounder surface. Despite being a 9-year-old, he remains capable of better over fences.
Some Scope was well backed when winning the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby on his penultimate start. He wasn’t suited by the drop in trip and track when pulling up last time. A sound surface suits and whilst he should stay 3m 2f I wonder if he’s better at 3m.
Weveallbeencaught was an easy winner here (3m) 35 days ago. Up 8lb from last time demands more from the 8-year-old but a sound surface suits and he looks worth another try over today's longer trip.
Erne River a three time course winner plugged on to finish a 18 ½ length 4th of 13 in the Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase (3m) here last time. Shapes likes a step up to 3m 2f could suit and has claims.
Moroder won this race on good ground two years off 6lb higher. Struggled last season until finishing a 1 ½ length 2nd of 14 at Cheltenham last April. That Cheltenham performance showed his trainer can prepare for a race when required and he gets his ground here.
Betting Advice...
Erne River - 1 point win
White Rhino - 1 point win
Moroder - 1 point each-way
Result: Morodar Won at 33/1 SP 67.33 Betfair SP
